Private IFR (PIFR)

Our PIFR course enables you to fly safely under Instrument Flight Rules, opening up more flying opportunities regardless of weather. You’ll develop expert skills in instrument navigation, flight planning, and IFR procedures, all aligned with CASA standards. Whether aiming to improve safety or extend your flying scope, this course prepares you to handle IFR operations confidently.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for the PIFR rating, you must:

  • Hold a current Private Pilot Licence (PPL).

  • Possess a current Class 2 medical certificate.

  • Have completed a flight review within the last 24 months.

  • Be proficient in English to a level that allows effective communication in aviation contexts.

Requirements

Flight Training Requirements (CASA minimums):

  • Minimum 15 hours of dual instruction under IFR conditions (may include flight simulator time).

  • Successful completion of the CASA IFR flight test demonstrating required competencies.

  • Total aeronautical experience of at least 40 hours, including:

  • Minimum 20 hours pilot-in-command time.

  • Minimum 10 hours cross-country flight time.

  • Minimum 10 hours instrument flight time (under VFR or IFR).

Theory Requirements:

  • Ground instruction on IFR air law, navigation techniques, meteorology, aircraft systems, and IFR flight planning.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in a CASA theory exam or knowledge check before flight test.
